In a world full of bagels, it’s OK to be a Donut!

Writer: Real Estate Photography MidwestReal Estate Photography Midwest

When I was growing up I used to love Saturday mornings. I would look forward to watching Saturday cartoons and take a trip with Dad to the bakery to pick out a donut. I remember feeling excited and looked forward to waking up early as I went to bed Friday night.

Times have changed as cartoons can be streamed any hour of the day and donuts are always available at the local convenience store. As an adult, I had grown to love weekends because I would look forward to the opportunity to sleep in after a full work week. Shane, on the other hand, is an early bird and loves starting each day as soon as the sun comes up. He has found a clever way to motivate me out of bed early on Saturday mornings. For the past year we often take a drive to Sheboygan to visit Johnston Bakery for coffee and donuts.

Johnston Bakery is a corner store front with ample parking. The bakery has a comforting Norman Rockwell feel with glass windows that display different treats, breads and a view of the fireplace in the seating area. They have everything you would expect in a bakery. I enjoy hearing the bell ring as we open the door, the efficient staff who takes our order and the cozy environment.

We typically order the same thing, two black coffees along with a Pershing donut for Shane and a custard filled donut with chocolate frosting for me. Our order costs around six dollars depending on the size of the coffees which is a very small price for the whole experience. We sit in their front room and discuss the past week, our plans for the day and watch others enjoy their treats. We see a variety of ages from young families to older couples. Regardless of age, we see sugary smiles content with each other’s company and conversation.

Today, with our electronic devices, abundance of stressors and endless kids activities we often are busy “doing” things but forget to really give each

other our full attention. Let’s remember to feed our relationships whether it is, parent and child, husband and wife or between friends take time for each other. It really doesn’t take much to fully connect, just a small amount of time to start a tradition. I love starting our Saturday’s at the bakery with a morning treat before we shuffle off to run errands and continue with our weekend activities.
